Samples – ‘Drop Bombs’ Remixes on Daly City Records

    2011 - 01.18

Since the release of Ben Sample’s chart toping “Snowstorm” album last year on Daly City Records, it was obvious that the bass grinding track “Drop Bombs” has become a staple in the glitch-hop and bass heavy communities. The natural response was that a remix album would soon follow. Re-imagined by Mochipet, Freddy Todd, Sovereign Sect, Stephan Jacobs, Psymbionic, Chris B, Sugarpill, Dan K, and Samples himself, there is a rework to fit any basshead’s taste! Ranging between 80-140 bpm, each mix contains ultra heavy bass lines and jaw dropping builds. We’ve got two free tracks for you to listen to as well as a promo-mix by Mochipet, so you can get a little taste of the full release.

    Check out these free 320s:

Sugarpill’s Flow Goggles EP Review and Bonus Track

    2010 - 09.11

Sugarpill‘s Flow Goggles EP has been on my list of music to be reviewed for a few weeks now. Released on Mochipet’s Daly City Records at the end of August, Flow Goggles is evidence of this rising producer’s continual growth. Sure, I could go into superlatives about the “hottest EP of the summer” and the “latest must have tracks” but that’s not necessarily what Flow Goggles is about. This is Sugarpill flexing his musical muscles after years of practice. And it’s not all about production or brute balls to the wall bass but about the search for one’s own sound within glitch hop, a genre of music that prides itself in its ability to elude description.

One of the hardest tasks for an electronic musician is to establish a sound of his own. A sound that encapsulates a unique energy and produces almost instantaneous recognition. Flow Goggles is not that album, but it’s certainly a step in that direction. The prominent use of acapellas that were hallmark of Sugarpill’s previous releases and DJ sets play a much less prominent role. The vocal samples that are present, are so spliced and affected that they can barely be identified. And that’s a good thing. The vocals have become an instrument that Sugarpill wields rather than just a hook for the audience to get off on.

All this leaves more room for Sugarpill to display his compositional skills which are reaching maturity. His greatest strength being his ability to marry the unpredictability and complexity of IDM with the glitches and bass of the West Coast sound, without losing a catchy and heartfelt pop aesthetic. With the release of Flow Goggles, Sugarpill leaves the shallow waters behind and begins to float towards the deep end. And we can’t wait to hear more when he gets there.

Flow Goggles EP is available at Additech

And as a special gift, a free download of Sugarpill’s Verderbo (Rock and Rose) written for this year’s Burning Man.

Sugarpill’s Gear Guide for Beginner Ableton DJs

    2010 - 07.14

Want to start cutting up some beats and begin DJing but don’t know where to start? Then Sugarpill has an excellent introductory gear guide for you. From controllers to soundcards, this is a quick and dirty list that may save you a lot of time spent on research.

Head over to InTheMix with Sugarpill for the review.

And here’s a little bit of my own input:

As far controllers go, the now discontinued M-Audio Trigger Finger is a staple. There’s a reason why you see almost every VJ/controllerist/DJ with one. It’s highly customizable but sacrifices on durability. I love the hell out of Trigger Finger, had it for a few years now, but you’ve just got to accept that it isn’t built to last. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a fantastic device. There are many people out there who are on their fifth one and are always hunting for a back up.

Sugarpill recommends the MDR-V700 headphones and although they are the standard, I found them to be only adequate. I had a pair and went through them in about a year. After that I got the Sennheiser HD 25-SP II and I’m never looking back. Shell out the extra $50 and you will not be disappointed! Plus all parts are user replaceable. The only caution is that you should try them out and see how they feel. Some people complain about tightness around the ears, but I found them to loosen up after a few months. Plus, the tight fit provides a little bit of sound isolation as well.

Finally, Sugarpill is absolutely right about notebook and midi controller stands. This trend is catching on and it makes for much more interaction between performer and audience.

“Go to your local office supply store or online DJ store and get something to set your laptop on or your back will hurt after a 45 minute session. Equally important is the Midi Controller stand, as an Ableton DJ it is really important that people can see what you are doing on the pads. It drives me crazy when someone sets their trigger finger up behind their raised computer and the extent of their stage show is something that looks like occasionally checking your email and then dancing around about what you’ve seen on it.”
