    Lunchmeat Festival 2012 @ Meetfactory March 23-24, 2012

    2012 - 02.28

Next month, on Friday March 23rd, Meetfactory and Bio Oko will host the 3rd Annual Lunchmeat Festival.  It’s a two day festival that starts on Friday and continues to Sunday.  The concept behind Lunchmeat is a bit different from your usual music festival.

“Lunchmeat is an international festival of electronic music, visual art and new media based in Prague, Czech Republic. The main feature of the festival is to keep a balance between musician and visualizer, to let them perform in an organic connection; visuals and sound as equal elements.” [Lunchmeat.cz]

The festival will showcase DJs and artists all over Europe.  Notable acts include UK’s Author (Techtonic) and Kode9 (Hyperdub).  Author is the collaboration of two well known dubstep producers, Jacksparrow and Ruckspin.  Both have been producing and touring since 2007, performing at sold-out festivals such as Outlook in Croatia.  Kode9 will be playing twice–in both music and visual contexts.  For those of you that are unfamiliar with his music, take a listen and you’ll automatically understand the endless possibilities of expressing Kode9′s music through a visual medium.  His music smoothly blends dub and dubstep and evokes a spacial, eerie mood.

The festival will also feature sets by Incite (DE), Nikka + Alba G. Corral (ES), DMX Krew (UK) + SPAM (CZ), Hecq (DE), and Florence To (UK).

    Tickets:
Bio Oko 190 CZK presale / 250 CZK on the spot
MeetFactory 290 CZK + tax presale / 390 CZK on the spot
2 day festival pass 480 CZK + tax presale

Slugabed and Kuedo unleashed some dirty UK bass at the Meetfactory this past weekend.

Showing the Czech Republic how it’s done in the good ol’ UK, up and coming DJs Slugabed and Kuedo kept the crowd going at the Meetfactory this past Friday.  The event was organized by Prague’s Education Parties and also featured sets by DJs Forma, Floex, and Valta.

Kuedo was the first out of the two UK DJs.  His set promptly started at midnight with some dark, chilling dubstep that definitely caught the crowd’s attention.  He played for a versatile hour with tracks ranging from glitch, grime, dubstep, to hip hop.  He definitely got the audience warmed up and set the mood right for the rest of the evening.

Slugabed took the stage at around 1am and played for about an hour and half.  His set started off with some slow, dark dubstep but he varied it up by dropping some heavy bass and adding some fun funky, bouncy tracks that kept the crowd movin’ and groovin’.

Education Parties did a great job of organizing the event.  All the DJs went on as scheduled, there were no delays, and the crowd was clearly digging it.  The Meetfactory was the perfect size–small enough for the show to feel intimate and personal, while just big enough not to feel too crowded and claustrophobic.  The show was a success on all counts–great vibes, great people, and of course, great music.

    See for yourself:

    Emika w/ Stroon @ Meetfactory February 24, 2012

    2012 - 02.21

This Friday, the Czech Republic welcomes UK’s Emika back to her motherland.  Originally from Bristol, the producer/singer currently resides in Berlin where she has been working in sound design.  This weekend, she’ll be performing here in Prague for the first time.  Emika has a unique style that combines the dark, melodic dubstep of Bristol with the eerie, minimal house beats that make up the Berlin electronic scene.  On top of her production, the artist also sings with a voice similar to that of American indie musician Zola Jesus.  Emika has just released her first album, self-titled Emika, off Ninja Tune Records this past October (2011).  Judging from her studio recordings, her live performance will definitely be one for the books.  She’s got a femme fatale look and sound that will not disappoint.  This one’s for all the independent women out there.

Tickets are 250 CZK via ticketportal.cz, ticketpro.cz, and ticketstream.cz and 350 CZK at the door.

Claviq fast forwards us to the summer with a new LP full of lazy, hazy tracks.

    2012 - 02.18

Glitch’s very own 22 year old producer from Prague, Claviq, released his latest album called Fawns just under a month ago on January 25, 2012.  The album is comprised of 16 glitchy, wonky, downtempo, chill wave, jazzy, dubstep, and hip hop tracks that will leave you feeling like it’s a breezy summer evening.  Fans of downtempo will love this album’s jazzy tunes such as Smuf Luf and Still Ill, that incorporate  classic sounds like the piano and saxophone.  For hip hop enthusiasts, check out the record scratching in Follow Drty Path and Runnin.  For a great chill wave tune to get you through these winter blues, Good One is a definite must listen.  Finally, my personal favorite is Slepitchky, a chill, downtempo, glitchy song similar to Gold Panda’s sound.

    Fawns Track List:
    1. Prostatic Halls (Intro)
    2. Without Pills
    3. Country Club
    4. Smuf Luf
    5. Gimme Sum

    D.V.S* From Dusk to Dawn

    2012 - 02.11

Guitarist, DJ, Mandolinist, and music extraordinaire, Derek VanScoten is an up-and-coming Producer from Brooklyn.  His latest double album Coming Up for Air–Dawn and Dusk, is definitely something Glitch fans will adore.  VanScoten is one of a few DJs that play guitar live while he DJs.  The versatile musician, skilled in various different genres of music such as jazz, bluegrass, folk, hip hop, funk, and electro, has exhibited his many talents in 30 tracks split into two albums called Dusk and Dawn.  Dusk features elements of post rock, moombaton, drum and bass, hip hop, and more, leaving the listener in a state of grandeur.  A lot of the tracks exhibit a spacey, epic feel with extravagant guitar rifts reminiscent of the electronic group, Ratatat.

While tracks such as Shortness of Breath gets you feeling like you’re at a post-rock concert, tracks like Butterflyz brings you back to the dubstep and drum and bass.  BBC Galaxy makes you feel spacey and is similar to Daft Punk’s Tron soundtrack.  And if you’re craving some Latin inspired moombaton, then Baile Baile Baile!!! is the track for you.  This album is easily one of the most versatile albums out there, offering a taste of many different styles of music–rock and electronic.

If downtempo is more of your thing, than Dawn is definitely the album for you.

For all you Dubstep fans out there, Joker will be joining us in the Czech Republic this Friday at the Roxy.  Originally from Bristol, he has become quite an active, respected force in the UK electronic music scene.  He’s been billed next to artists such as Skream, Benga, Coki, Mala, Hatcha–arguably a few of the pioneers in this genre–and the whole UK dubstep/grime crew.  Don’t miss the opportunity to catch some versatile dubstep here in Prague.  I promise it won’t just be a bunch of womp womps.
